Meditation: Day 84 / 100 — WTF Are ‘Hip Dips’ & Why This Needs To STOP!

There’s something I want to talk about today…

Something I feel passionate about — so I’m warning you! 🖐

And that’s a brand new body positivity movement AND body shaming craze that’s been born…

‘Hip Dips’…

The latest body trend that a lot of girls are talking about on social media, shaming and hating on.

And I think it should stop. Both the positive stuff AND the not so positive stuff.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t even think ‘hip dips’ were a bloody thing until I saw a fitness ‘role-model’ I follow on instagram post about hers on instagram (now I may be re-considering that role-model status I crowned her with)…

She spoke about how she despised them. How she posed in certain ways so you’d never knew she had them. How they make her feel fat, in no way sexy, and how she wants to try out every exercise routine under the sun to get that ‘peach shape’ instead.

BLAH!

Ok, I can be compassionate here — I’ve been there, we all have body hang ups, and I’ve wished I could change my shape too in the past from a negative stand point (not from a loving)…

It’s just when I see this new craze raging like a storm on social media, it breaks my heart when I see girls who NEVER had a problem with their hips, now all of a sudden focus all their energy on them and want them to change.

So what are these ‘hip dips’?…

Apparently where you have an inward curve below your hips and above your thighs (because of the way your pelvis is positioned, not necessarily because you carry fat there)…

I have them, see:

And I think they look GREAT. I LOVE them, always have liked my lower body, and I don’t care sayin’.

I spent years scrutinising myself for not looking a certain way; dieting real bad, exercising to the extreme, spitting hate at myself every time I looked in the mirror and put my hands on my body — heck, I’ll admit I still don’t love every single part of me every single day, we all have off days… But I’ll be damned if I’m ever going to abuse myself that way again.

Because I figured that unless I started to appreciate and embrace my body for what it is — strong, amazing and capable, I’ll never even come close to being happy with it.

I mean really, your body carries you through life, if you hate it… that’s one heck of a life sentence to put yourself through. So STOP it. It allows you to do brilliant things.

So, it saddens me when I read girls posting things like this:

“My hips used to be one of my favourite parts of my body, but now I’ve seen the #hipdips I’m wondering if I like them at all…”

These instagram posts have made me notice something I was never bothered about before, and now I question if they’re an imperfection.”

“My hips are now one of my biggest insecurities everyday.”

Jeez. This is f*$ked up.

And even since people have been hating on them… and a load of body positivity posts have been coming out of the woodwork trying to smash the negativity down, it seems this movement isn’t being very helpful.

It’s made some girls realise a part of their body they never paid attention to …and now it’s ALL they pay attention to.

It’s putting ‘hip dips’ in peoples faces everyday when they scroll through their instagram feed.

It’s what some women’s eyes now go to immediately when they look in the mirror.

And it’s even making women want to cover them up and do bloomin’ exercise routines to get rid of them.

Body positive activists I do love you and I get what you’re trying to do. You’re trying to empower and inspire — and it does!

But it makes me feel passionately heated when it’s come from something that never bothered many until the topic of ‘hip-dips’ even became a thing…

So let’s leave the movements for things that genuinely worry people— and let’s go back to not caring about our ‘hip dips’ enough to ‘accept’ them on social media.

They’re hips.

Hips are great. They carry babies, support your body, and feel awesome being held onto.

#HipsFTW

Enjoy the body type you’ve been blessed with ladies and gents — they’re all sexy as fire.

Let’s get back to living shall we?

Love ya zillions,

Amy xo

Wow, I hadn’t even heard of “hip dips”, but I sure did notice mine (I have them big time). I personally thought they were coveted because they accentuate a curvy shape! I will keep on thinking they are attractive and not something to be worked off or cursed. Thanks for posting, Amy ❤

Goodness, sorry this took me a while to get back to you. I’ve been off the radar with travel (silly excuse, huh?) Hip dips are gorgeous! As are no hip dips. Don’t even know why they became a ‘thing’! And thank you for the nomination lovely 🙂 ❤
